Casting skill is the most important tool the fly fisherman can possess! If you cannot
get the fly to the fish then you can’t catch it!
Flying Fish Outfitters is pleased to work with Dusty Sprague to offer casting instruction for any level of experience. You will gain valuable skills to improve your fishing odds while having a truly enjoyable experience- Dusty is an equally personable and gifted instructor.
About Dusty
Dusty's passion is teaching fly casting and shallow-water fly fishing. He began fly fishing in the late 1950s; began tying flies and teaching fly casting in the 1970s and guiding in the 1980s. He has fly fished for fresh and saltwater species in 24 states, Belize, Mexico, the Bahamas, and Canada and has guided in Alaska. He is the former manager of a fly fishing shop and guide service. He has been a featured presenter of fly casting demonstrations at numerous fishing shows and has appeared on NBC's Today Show. In 1992 the Federation of Fly Fishers began the Casting Instructor Certification Program, for the purpose of enhancing the overall level of instruction in fly casting, including instructor knowledge, casting proficiency, and teaching ability. Two levels of certification exist - Certified Instructor and Master Certified Instructor. There are approximately 1000 Certified Instructors and 100 Master Certified Instructors in the world today. Policy for the program is developed by a Board of Governors consisting of 30 of the world's top fly casting instructors, including Mel Krieger, Joan Wulff, Gary Borger, and Doug Swisher. Dusty is a Master Certified Instructor and a member of the Board of Governors.
Basic Fly Casting
is designed for those new to the sport and provides an introduction and solid foundation for good fly casting and shallow-water fly fishing in the saltwater environment. Students will learn fundamentals of good fly casting, including the basic casting stroke, casting loops, and principles and variables in good fly casting. We will examine the advantages and disadvantages of different casting styles, including stance, grip, and body movements. We'll practice the different casts needed to effectively present the fly at varying distances under different wind conditions. The purpose of this level of instruction is to get you "operational" with a fly rod.
Intermediate/Advanced instruction is designed to improve existing fly casting and fly fishing skills. This instruction includes analysis of present casting skills and correction of any faults. Students will learn the techniques of presenting the fly with speed and accuracy at both short and long distances, under varying wind conditions, fishing from a flats boat as well as wade fishing. We'll cover loop control, carrying more line, the double haul, drift, shooting line, and the advantages and disadvantages of different casting styles.
